The Bailey Homestead Preserve is bursting with activity and a lot of dirt is being moved in preparation for its public opening. A ribbon cutting recently opened the Starr D. Thomas Memorial Boardwalk, an elevated walkway that is connects Sanibel’s Pond Apple Trail with SCCF’s new Shipley’s Trail and the Bailey Homestead Preserve. The Pond Apple Park trail is a 1.6 mile loop trail that starts at the parking lot of the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce and leads hikers and bicyclists through a tropical hardwood and wetland forest, pine flatwoods, and open water habitats where they can observe wildlife in their native habitats.
A recent sneak peek at the goings-on revealed another important development–the soon to be Devitt Pond at the Preserve.
