For bird enthusiasts, this is a flock of Magnificent Frigate Birds flying over Ocean’s Reach. They have extremely long wings and they are beautiful to watch soaring overhead. They are also only one of two birds known to spend days and nights on the wing, and will soar to as high as 2500 m.
Male Frigate Birds have a purplish black body and a bright-red throat pouch. The females are browner and have a white breast, and juveniles are lighter brown and have a white head and breast. To learn more interesting facts about the Magnificent Frigate Birds, click here.
The Ocean’s Reach Osprey villa is occupied for the season and the nesting process has begun. According to the International Osprey Foundation, Sanibel’s Ospreys fledged 79 chicks in 2008, which was double the number from 2007! That is wonderful news and it will be quite interesting to see what happens in the new year. With all of the volunteer help things are looking up for the Osprey population on Sanibel.
The serious birder is Paul Parrick, who was staying in 2×1. What fun it would be to see the pictures of the Osprey through that fantastic looking camera!
