The Bailey-Mathews Shell Museum on Sanibel Island has started another wonderful program directed towards children, but which will also benefits parents! There was an article about the program published in our local newspaper that quotes Dru Doyle about implementing it at Ocean’s Reach. This program is best described by Diane Orvis Thomas, who is the Public Programs Specialist for the Museum.
In response to an identified need introduced by lodging partners throughout the county, The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum has developed a resort program called, Children Play . . . Parents May . . .? . . .
Family vacations are great, but did you ever find yourself dreaming of a few hours of adult play time? Maybe Mom and Dad have shopping in mind without the stress of assuring fragile gift shop objects remain on the shelves. Perhaps your favorite book is calling or you wish you could have a meal accompanied by just grown-up conversations. Do you ever have the vision of walking hand and hand down the beach, but linking with only one set of hands?
If so – this program is for you. Drop the children off and enjoy 2 ½ hours of guilt-free adult time. Your children won’t even know you’re gone because they will be reading about mollusks and their friends, playing educational games, creating shell craft projects, making fact wheels or pop-up books, and doing creative writing.
The program is appropriate for ages 5 through 12. The cost is $15.00 per child. Classes will be held at the Museum from 9:00 – 11:30 am on the following Tuesdays and Thursday in July, August and September:
July 28, 30
August 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27
September 15, 17, 22, 24
To register call Diane Orvis Thomas, the Museum’s Public Programs Specialist, at 239.395.2233, ext 11 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org   Register by 3 pm Monday for Tuesday sessions and 3 pm Wednesday for Thursday sessions.
Dr. Sharon Smith, a guest who spends her summer with us is also a school principal. She was gracious enough to write the following article that describes her feelings of a Sanibel vacation while staying at Ocean’s Reach.
“I am so grateful for the peace and the calm of the seashore, where time stands still and unrushed…where I can see and feel the beauty all around me.”
For the past three summers Dr. Sharon Smith and her husband JP, a retired educator, have come to Ocean’s Reach when Westside High School in Macon, Georgia closes for the regular school year. Sanibel and Ocean’s Reach have become Dr. Smith’s summer sanctuary where she refreshes, renews, and reenergizes her spirit.
For seven luxurious weeks this year she has read, shopped, attended aerobics at the Senior Citizen Center, shopped, taken a cruise to Cabbage Key for that famous “Cheeseburger in Paradise” made popular by Jimmy Buffet, shopped, attended Sanibel Community Church, shopped, watched many movies, shopped, ate in a dozen different restaurants, shopped, walked seven miles each day, and shopped, shopped, shopped.
Back Home is Westside High School, home of the Seminoles. It is here that Dr. Smith is truly in her niche: HOPE—Helping Other People Excel. She mentors both students and teachers, attends football, basketball, baseball and other athletic events. Westside has an outstanding Fine Arts Department that hosts a plethora of singing, dancing, and dramatic talent as well that she doesn’t miss.
It is during these Sanibel summers watching the rolling surf, searching for shells for her Sanibel Christmas tree and being mesmerized by the moon lighting up the serenity of this place that inspiration flows for her personal focus for a new school year. The question this year is: “What are the strategies to being super-motivated Seminoles”. She and her colleagues will brainstorm and develop a plan encompassing five steps she believes that will best seek to help students love learning, excel at Westside and their future careers.: (1) Sharpen School Skills; (2) Teach them to Tune in; (3) Set an A+ example; (4) Unstuff the afterschool schedule; and (5) Praise effort, not intellect.

Each summer from mid June through the middle of August 40,000 to 50,000 purple martins from Brazil arrive to spend the summer in the Fort Myers area. Each night they roost in only four trees located on Hendry Street in downtown Fort Myers. They arrive at dusk from foraging during the day. The sky is blackened by the soaring flight of the martins. People gather each night outside the Bar Association Restaurant to watch this magnificent display of nature.

The Periwinkle Park and Campground on Sanibel Island hosts an incredible bird presentation most days by Libby, the Bird Lady. Robert and Judy Groninger sent these pictures to share from their trip in February. The two young men accompanying them are their grandsons, Evan and Liam Chilcote, and it looks like the boys really enjoyed their close interactions with the birds. Robert writes, “The Bird Lady has been doing this presentation for many years. You park outside the welcome gate and walk in, and anyone can ride their bike inside to see the birds and caged area, anytime. We take the kids there almost every year! The Bird Lady tells the history of each bird, habits, and a lot of information about wild birds in general. She also makes dvds available of presentation and facts about birds. We think everyone should see this wonderful presentation!!! In the summer months it may not be every day, so it might be wise to call first before going. Robert and Judy followed the bird show with the “Grand Finale”, DQ, located just across the street. Don’t forget when you are visiting Ocean’s Reach that the Periwinkle Park and Campground is one of the favorite all time Sanibel activities.
