Take a day trip to Fort Myers

Enhance your Sanibel beachfront vacation at Ocean’s Reach by taking an easy day trip to Fort Myers. We have three great ideas.

Since some may want to venture off the beach for a day or two, may we make suggestions for a Fort Myers day trip?

#1: Edison’s Fruit and Vegetables

At 12, Thomas Edison began learning business by buying fresh produce from farmers and selling them to markets along the railroad. You can stroll into this bygone era with a Thursday visit to the Fort Myers Farmers Market, then taking a short walk or drive to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates for a tour of the gracious, rambling homes and grounds of two of America’s most famous inventors. Edison’s tropical botanical garden is one of the most complete in America.

Farmers Market: Thursdays, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with locally grown fruits, vegetables, fish, baked goods, flowers and plants.

Winter Estates: Daily 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Botanical Tours: Thursday & Saturday at 9 a.m.

#2: Boston Red Sox Spring Training

After a morning at the Farmers Market or Edison & Ford Winter Estates (see #1 above), spend the afternoon at the City of Palms Park watching the Boston Red Sox Spring Training. Get your tickets before you go, then it’s an easy walk or drive to the park.

#3: Sing Along with the Manatees

The gulf waters are cold now, which means the manatees are congregating in the warm waters of Manatee Park in Fort Myers. Sidewalks along canals and three elevated observation areas help you see these gentle sea cows, while hydrophones let you hear their songs. Piers, butterfly gardens, and kayak launches and rentals add to your enjoyment. Call (239) 690-5030.
