Look What’s Holding Our Beach
Beach Preservation
There are two very significant players in the preservation of our beaches… the gently swaying Sea Oats and the beautiful meandering Railroad Vines.
Railroad Vines are similar to Morning Glories in that they are a trailing species with runners that may reach over 30 feet in length. The tap roots may extend as far as a meter down into the sand which helps stabilize the beaches. It is also one of the most common beach plants in tropical areas.
Sea oats found along the Florida coastal areas, play an important role in helping with dune stabilization because of their intricate underground root system. This root system holds the sand dunes in place and helps reduce erosion.
Please note though that it is against the law to pick the sea oats that grow wild. You can purchase certain varieties of plants and seeds from nurseries that have a license to propogate. So do not pick the Sea Oats, just admire!
