A Sunday Excursion With Andy
My next destination was to walk by the City Of Palms Baseball Stadium, winter home of the Boston Red Sox. It is only a few more days before the pitchers and catchers arrive for training. It is a beautiful stadium and sells out every game during the month of March. Outside the stadium is a statue of my favorite ballplayer when I was a kid. If you can name the player and his favorite charity you will win a prize to be determined by our expert panel, Charlie and Dru.
Good luck, and see you next Sunday!
Andy

Andy, Player is Ted Williams, greatest hitter in Baseball history, and his favorite Charity was Jimmy’s Fund. Jimmy’s Fund supports fight against Cancer in Children and Adults at Bostons Dana Farber Cancer Institute. It was started in 1948 and after the Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1953,Tom and Jean Yawkey, owners of the Red Sox, adopted the Fund as official charity of the Red Sox.Ted Williams became first Player to become involved in the Charity and did so for his lifetime.Best to everyone,we enjoyed our month of Jan. visit and you,Dru,and Charley continue to do a great job for OR,Chuck Bryden

Good morning, Dru, Andy and Charley. As it snows in Kansas City this Sunday morning, it is nice to be thinking of baseball and spring training.
I see that Chuck Bryden has already nailed the correct answer to the quiz–Ted Williams (the “Splendid Splinter”) has a great statue outside the spring training home of the Red Sox. Ted’s involvement with the “Jimmy Fund” was legendary, and his fight against children’s cancer was very well-known.
Hope all is well at Ocean’s Reach, and Stephanie, Hannah, Braden and I look forward to seeing you in August.

Hi Andy
I knew the player had to be old #9. But I had no idea which charity. And I see that 2 others got the answer very quickly. (I just read the email this morning).
Ted also played for the old Minneapolis Millers up here in MN. As did the “say hey kid”. Some pretty darn good ball players passed thru here.
See ya in 19 more days, when I’ll collect my OR beach towel for Bill “Spaceman” Lee.
